5 Ways You Can Help Keep Best Friends Together This Christmas

With the silly season almost upon us, it’s easy to get caught up in Christmas parties, shopping or food preparation, and to lose sight of what it’s really about: spending time with the ones we love. Of course, this time of year can also be especially difficult for people facing hardship and homelessness, which is why keeping people and pets together is more important than ever!

Whatever our circumstance, we all want to share the holidays with those who mean the most to us. Pets of the Homeless (POTH) will be working hard throughout December to make sure that Melbourne’s pets enjoy the kind of Christmas all good cats and dogs deserve.

Here are 5 ways that you can help us this Christmas.

1. Say No to Christmas presents – request a donation to POTH instead!

If you have enough socks to last a lifetime and your gift vouchers get lost before you spend them, consider the joy you could share by requesting a gift that really counts this Christmas. Say ‘no thanks’ to traditional Christmas pressies and ask your thoughtful family and friends to make a donation to Pets of the Homeless in your name. A tax-deductible donation of $15 will keep a pet safe from parasites, $35 will keep a pet fed for a month and $200 will provide a week’s worth of safe sleeps to pet in need. You can’t say that about a pair of socks!

2. Buy your gifts at the POTH Shop

Is there anything better than a one stop shop for gifts for family, friends and… let’s be real…ourselves? We’ve been filling the POTH Shop with all new goodies perfect for sharing this festive season. There you’ll find POTH-branded Keep Cups, our 2018 Love Tales calendar, Christmas cards, tote bags, t-shirts and more! This is your official invitation to go on a shopping spree and feel good about it – because every dollar goes back into our work with people and pets facing homelessness together.

3. Participate in our Christmas Appeal

We all know how good it feels to give, and what better way to spread the Christmas cheer than organising a pet food drive for Pets of the Homeless? Helping to feed hungry pets is a hugely important part of what we do at POTH but unfortunately we are running particularly low on cat food leading into the holidays. If you’d like to help, suggest to your family, friends, and work colleagues that they ditch the Secret Santa routine and start a new giving tradition by collecting pet food or monetary donations to support keeping best friends together this Christmas! Visit our Christmas Appeal page to find out more.

4. Participate in the #FeedItForward campaign

Spoil your 4-legged friends to a special festive feast these holidays with limited edition Jingle Balls from our good pals at 4Legs. Available  exclusively in Woolworths stores nationwide throughout December, these tasty and nutritious treats – made with fresh turkey, pumpkin, apple and spices – mark the launch of 4Legs’ #feeditforward campaign, meaning 25 cents from each pack of Jingle Balls sold will be donated to Pets Of The Homeless Australia. Your purchase will help feed someone else’s best friend over the holiday season and your own doggo will thank you too!

5. Spread the word

Finally, the most simple thing you can do to support POTH this Christmas is to help spread the word about the importance of keeping best friends together. Maintaining the relationships of people and pets facing hardship has a huge impact – for them, for their pets and for our community. We know this and you know this – now we need everyone else to jump on board! Help us grow our community of supporters by sharing our posts on social media, encouraging your network to sign up to our monthly newsletter, and chat with the people you love about who we are, what we do, and why it’s important to you.  Be an ambassador for keeping best friends together!
