It’s said joy is doubled when it’s shared, so we’re thrilled to finally share with you what’s been keeping us happy-dancing for the past week or so: Pets of the Homeless (POTH) is a finalist in the 2017 BUPA Blog Awards!
We’re incredibly proud of this achievement, made all the more surreal by the fact that our little charity is only 2 years old, our website was launched 6 short months ago, and we’ve been blogging for just three months! It’s hard to believe this passion project – something we do in our spare time, which began as a replacement of POTH’s FAQ section – has evolved into an award-nominated blog with a dedicated monthly readership.
But isn’t that the thing about doing what you love? People will take notice. The tiny team who puts this blog together across two states, many hours and countless message threads are:
- POTH CEO and founder, Yvonne, who guides the direction of the blog, making suggestions for articles she’d like us to produce and does the final formatting and editing.
- Our writer, Nick, who brainstorms topics, researches and crafts the articles.
- And Kara (that’s me), the editor who wrangles the fact-checking, punctuation, and prose-polishing.
When we started this thing, we were hoping to address some of the common questions and comments we receive about people facing homelessness with their companion animals in a little more depth. So far, we’ve delved into the benefits of quality pet food over quantity, announced our vision for Australia’s very first Pet Food Bank, and dispelled myths about homeless pet-owners by discussing who we help and why.
We hope we’ve brought clarity to some of the issues surrounding our outreach work, and offered transparency about how your much-valued donations are put to use.

We’re still not exactly sure how this very small and very new blog came to the attention of the good people at BUPA, but we’re incredibly grateful for the honour of being a finalist in their awards. It’s true, we’re among prestigious company, but thanks to our supporters we have every chance of taking home the title of Australia’s Best Pet Blog!
