Spud was so joyful in fact that in his haste to jump into his human’s arms, the stocky boy managed to knock out Erin’s front teeth!
The road has not been easy for the devoted duo of almost 10 years, who were separated when Erin faced homelessness following a series of traumatic events.
But after Spud’s two stints in our foster care program to enable Erin to find her feet, she secured a safe space for her beloved boy to come home.
Today, we are so happy to report that things are going swimmingly. Especially for cheeky Spud, who on a recent walk decided to take a quick dip in a nearby river and then sneak off with a freshly caught fish from a local fisherman!
Although Spud is now greying around the temples and is starting to slow down in his senior years, his enthusiasm for life - and his favourite human - has not dwindled.
Going for walks and car rides are two of Spud’s favourite things, and his love of getting outside has helped Erin’s health too.
“Some days if I don’t want to go outside, I know I have to,” Erin said. “Spud is a great motivation.”
Reflecting on Spud’s time in foster care, Erin says that although it was incredibly sad for them to be apart, it was also a relief to have time to find her feet during a challenging time.
“It was so comforting to know that Spud was safe, and that he was with a family who loved him and took care of him,” Erin said.
“I can’t even imagine what I would do if I had to surrender Spud. I am so grateful that Pets of the Homeless stepped in.”
Since getting her beautiful boy back, they have not spent a single night apart. And we have continued to help Spud with veterinary care, medication and supplements to keep him comfortable in his senior years.
“We’ve gone through a lot together, and we’re in a much better place now,” Erin said. “We have a secure home, and I’ve enrolled in university and have confirmed that Spud can join me on campus. Spud is very spoiled, but he deserves it. He’s my best friend. He can relax and enjoy his life now.”
